Wednesday, April 27, 5 pm, Morro Bay Museum of Natural History.
Join the Historical Society of Morro Bay, the Morro Bay Maritime Museum, and the San Luis Obispo Coast District of California State Parks for an event focused on WWII history in Morro Bay. Speakers Stuart McDowell (author, Sinking of the SS Montebello – When World War II Came to the Central Coast) and Cal Poly History department lecturer Dr. Margaret Bodemer will put the dramatic events of WWII on the Central Coast into perspective. Stuart McDowell will examine the story of the Montebello, an oil tanker sunk off the coast of Cambria by a Japanese submarine only two weeks after Pearl Harbor. Dr. Margaret Bodemer will explore how a more inclusive public history allows us to see a fuller picture of the past and reinscribes the contributions of many diverse actors and groups, such as African American soldiers stationed on the Central Coast. California State Parks and the Central Coast State Parks Association will unveil a new museum exhibition that highlights the impact of the war in our local State Parks, and tells the stories of the Central Coast residents whose lives were forever altered by the global events that touched our small coastal community.
