You'll be able to save yourself having to cook one night during the busy holiday season, while at the same time doing good by supporting the History Center. Did you know? At one time, the area of South and Brooks Streets was Japantown, inhabited by a thriving community of Japanese-Americans. With World War II came the shameful practice of internment, where Americans of Japanese descent were taken from their homes and held in camps away from the coast. World War II also brought new people to the city, including the families of African American soldiers serving at Camp San Luis and Camp Roberts, many of whom made the neighborhood home. Today, both legacies stand literally side by side, with Eto Park and St Luke Missionary Baptist Church being directly next door to each other. |
